Uri Caine was born in Philadelphia and began studying piano with Bernard Peiffer. He played in bands led by Philly Joe Jones, Hank Mobley, Johnny Coles, Mickey Roker, Odean Pope, Jymmie Merritt, Bootsie Barnes and Grover Washington. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and studied music composition with George Rochberg and George Crumb. Bedrock is Caine's electric ensemble. Here he gets to go wild with strange boxes and thingy-me's as well as his el-piano, an instrumet that takes the listeners back to the jazz funk sound of the 70s. His band adds bass, drums, samplings and whatever comes out of a laptop. Rather than undermining the conventional instruments, this gives further dimensions to Caine's tunes. Plus a dash of humour!
