Post-Marathon at the Serpentine Gallery

Following the extraordinary Serpentine Gallery Marathon: London on 28 – 29 July 2006,
Rem Koolhaas and Hans Ulrich Obrist return with
Post-Marathon.

This new event is conceived as a live research into the growing interest of investors and economic forces in the cultural industry – contemporary art, literature and architecture in particular. Sponsorship of cultural events as a more efficient form of branding and advertising, the interest of hedge funds and corporations in art collecting as a form of investment, a new form of philanthropy have recently reshaped the relationship between finance and culture.

Post-Marathon will address issues of power and the invisible laws governing the art market and the art world as well as the interaction between money and culture. Corporate world and finance are capitalizing culture not only with contemporary art acquisition, but also by rediscovering the key role of western aesthetics in the globalised economy. More and more business management and industrial production is looking at art, architecture and culture as a source for new inspiration. Is this interest shaping a new cultural landscape? Is this a new kind of capitalism relating differently to culture and entertainment? Are the notions of spectacle and cultural industry still useful intellectual tools to understand how knowledge is produced today?

Post-Marathon will purposely take place during the Frieze Art Fair, a major happening for art and for London that, together with Tate Modern, changed the cultural landscape of the city. Such background will be the perfect occasion to investigate the overlap and interaction between money and culture. This aims to bring to light the changes that the cultural industry has undergone after economic globalisation, and how such revolution has an effect on migration and economic fluxes up to urban planning and larger cultural politics. Post-Marathon will seek to point to new categories and language to promote the understanding of the changing role of culture in a global perspective.
